Catbells at 653m is Lakeland's most popular fell, beloved of young and old, fit and not-so-fit, everyone's favourite at all times of year. The views from its narrow summit are superb on all sides and make the ascent a memorable experience. Stronger walkers will enjoy striding out along the ridge over Maiden Moor to High Spy before descending steeply to Grange. Derwentwater provides a scenic low level circuit of around 10 miles/16 km. There's a footpath for much of the way and you can shorten the walk by hopping onto the motor launch at any one of its seven landing stages. The path winds through woodland and wetland (boardwalk) and hugs the shore in places, giving plenty of variety and many fine views. It's an easy walk at any time of year, although heavy rains can cause flooding at the southern end, forcing a detour onto the road. |
